5 secrets of perfect posing
We have lost count of the number of gorgeous models I’ve worked with who have never been taught to pose properly.
For a photographer, a model who knows the secrets of posing is like an angel that has just flown in through the window and landed in front of the camera. Posing is a crucial part of modelling and will make the difference between getting booked and getting binned.
Read on to discover the five secrets of perfect posing.
Perfect Posing Secret 1: KNOW your body:
No matter how many obsessive fans that you get as a model no one should know your body better than you do. If you are model, getting to know your body shouldn’t just be a pleasure it should be part of your job.
Look at yourself. How you naturally pose, stand and sit. How relaxed are you? Where do you want do you want to put your hands and legs? What poses do you have problems with?
Get to know yourself before you get in front of the camera.
Perfect Posing Secret 2: FACE it: You are beautiful
When looking at all of the pictures taken in a single shoot it becomes obvious that a facial expression can make or break an image. As a model if you are able to get control over your facial expressions then it’s a huge step towards becoming a professional.
Often an inexperienced model will have a small range of facial expressions that he or she thinks look good but they actually come across as strained, unnatural or uncomfortable.
It’s time to get in front of the mirror again but this time you are paying attention to your facial expressions.
Imagine that you are being instructed to pull different faces by a photographer and do them in the mirror. Try sexy, alluring, playful, innocent, shock.
The ultimate aim is to be able to accurately know what expression that you are doing when you can’t see yourself – and it starts in front of the mirror.
Perfect Posing Secret 3: LOOK and learn
If you are like most models I know then you’ve probably got a few magazines lying around full of professional models in all sorts of poses. Now it’s time to put those magazines to good use.
Looking at professional models posing is a great way to absorb a full range of positions. Look at the models. What are their arms doing? What position are their legs in? Is there face straight on or at an angle? What do they do with their hands? Are they smiling? Are they looking at the camera? What mood do they put across and how do they do that?
If you want to be a model then it is time to stop looking at these pictures as a consumer and start looking at them as a fellow model.
Studying professional models is a great way to internalise poses so that you can call on them when you are on a shoot.
Perfect Posing Secret 4: LISTEN
The most easily forgotten rule of posing and one of the most useful – listening.
Listening does not just apply when you are in front of the photographer but can start as soon as you are given the shoot brief. Understanding what the photographer wants to get from the shoot is a key part of giving a good performance.
Listening to the photographer’s instructions carefully both before and during the shoot will give you the knowledge to pose with ease.
Perfect Posing Secret 5: PRACTICE, practice, practice
Finally and most importantly for perfect posing is practice.
Posing practice in front of the mirror makes the single biggest difference between someone who can pose and someone who has difficulty. You wouldn’t try to speak French to a client without first learning and practicing the skill and it is exactly the same with posing.
For best results don’t just practice one pose but rather practice moving between poses as if you are moving between the clicks of a camera. Call on what you learnt about your body, your facial expressions and what you’ve seen professional models do.
Practice different moods and styles in front of a full length mirror until you are comfortable in a huge range of poses.
So, follow the above instructions, practice as much as you can and you will make sure that your clients will want to book you and re-book you again and again.
